Dal makhani itself is one among favorite dishes from India with red kidney, urad dal, lentils and spices as its main ingredients. Even though some people think that cooking dal makhani is quite difficult, it is always interesting to try one. If you are planning to serve Indian dishes, you better try this Dal Makhani recipe. Follow the step by step instructions and you will not get failed.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp Rajma (red kidney bean)
  • ½ cup whole sabut urad dal (black gram)
  • Salt
  • 2 inches ginger, chopped
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 3 tbsp Nutralite butter
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 6 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 green chili, slit
  • 2 medium tomatoes
  • 1 tsp garam masala powder

Cooking instructions:

  1. Wash and soak urad dal and rajma in 3 cups of water overnight. 
  2. Drain the soaked ingredients and boil in 3 cups of water with half of red chili powder and salt. Boil for 3 whistles of pressure cooker. When the pressure settles, open the lid and check whether the rajma is soft. Add another 3 minutes until it is soft. 
  3. In a pan, heat oil and butter. Add cumin seeds. Add garlic, ginger and onion. Sauté until golden.
  4. Add green tomatoes and green chili, sauté in high temperature. Add half red chili powder and sauté.
  5. Add boiled rajma and dal along with the water. Add more water if the consistency is too thick. Add salt and garam masala.
  6. Simmer until the dals are soft and well cooked.

This Dal Makhani recipe is for 4 servings with 8 to 10 hours of total cooking time. It contains 966 calories with 88.7g carb, 30.6 protein, and 54.3g fat with 19.9g fiber.
